Starting out on ShadowgateImportant rulesGiven the complexity of the Shadowgate MUD, there are also many rules that are in place to prevent game abuse or unfair treatment of other players. The rules below try to be comprehensive, however please refer to the following helpfiles in-game as well: "help newbie", "help roleplaying", "help faq".
Mithril Rule:
If you feel a rule has been broken, or an immortal has dealt unfairly with a situation, mail LAW. The rulings of LAW are final.
A higher ranked wizard who is not LAW will not overrule another immortal. In the case where a first decision has been rendered by a member of LAW, another member will review the appeal of the decision.
Platinum Rule:
While most cases will hold to the rules as clarified below, when necessary, immortals may need to override existing rules when it is in the best interest of the game.
If an immortal needs to amend or suspend a rule to accommodate a plot, players will be given notifications and clarification as needed, but the rule exception will not extend past the boundaries of that plot or incident. If you have a problem, see the Mithril Rule above.
Electrum Rule:You must tell the truth to immortals, unless they are playing a character for a plot.
Immortals frequently need accurate, true information to plan various plots and reactions of the citizenry, and like DM's, they need to know the truth, or in cases of bugs or weird code problems, exactly what you saw, in order to accurately replicate or track down a problematic bit of code.
+(Punishment)
First Offense: Jail.Second Offense: Rid.
Rules of the Stone: 1. A valid email address is required.
We need to know how to contact you.
+(Punishment)
Characters without a valid email address will be rid.
Rules of the Stone: 2. Scripts and triggers are illegal.
Everyone should be able to play on an equal footing, without having your client do all the work for you.
A Script is defined as anything that performs multiple actions, one after another, with or without branching logic.
A Trigger is defined as any command that is automatically sent to the MUD when your client recieves a pattern of text.
If you're tying an emote with an action to give more colour (or even in some cases, many colours.), it's fine. If you're tying more than one game-related action together, it's illegal. Tying together two or three social/emote actions together is fine, as is drawing two weapons, one in each hand, since each hand can do that separately.
+(Punishment)
If you are caught using a script or trigger, you will be jailed. Repeated offenses will result in rid.
Rules of the Stone: 3. Exploitation of bugs is illegal. If you're getting something too easily, it's probably a bug.
We create a lot of content. Sometimes the code interacts in different ways with each other, in ways we did not design it to.
+(Punishment)
Characters who exploit bugs will be jailed and will lose whatever they gained as a result of said bugs. Repeated offenses will result in rid.
Rules of the Stone: 4. Logging on multiple characters at the same time is illegal.
+(Punishment)
All characters involved will be rid.
Rules of the Stone: 5. Crossing knowledge, equipment, or money between characters is illegal.
+(Punishment)
Your characters will be linked, jailed, or rid, depending on the severity of the offense and prior history.
Rules of the Stone: 6. You are expected to role-play your character at all times.
Notable exceptions are the
fade to black rule, or helping other players learn the game.
Out of game subjects have no place on the boards or the game.
See help roleplaying for more details.
+(More/Punishment)
While some OOC communication is unavoidable, players who repeatedly and unnecessarily break character may be punished with warnings, xp penalties, levelcaps, or jailing, depending on the severity of the break.
Rules of the Stone: 7. Allowing RL relationships to influence IG actions is frowned upon.
For example, playing your paladin and partying with your girlfriend's evil priest for 20 levels.
+(Punishment)

Rules of the Stone: 8. Giving out quest information or leading a character through an area for the first time is illegal.
Leading someone through a quest ruins the "surprises" in the game for them, and cheapens both the experience, as well as the effort put in by coders to make the game interesting.
+(Punishment)
If you are caught doing this IG, both characters will be jailed. Repeated offenses will result in rid. If you are caught doing this through OOG channels, both characters will be rid.
Rules of the Stone: 9. Giving away, selling, or trading items to a character who has no reasonable chance of getting it themselves is illegal.
+(Punishment)
If you are caught doing this, you will be warned once, and the item(s) will be forfeit. Repeated offenses will result in jail or rid.
